Relationship Advice: When Love Hurts

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Terry Hernon MacDonald Why do some women stay with men who mistreat them? Does the pain make them feel alive? Perhaps they’ve absorbed the lyrics of love songs that perpetrate the myth that true love involves heartache. Shelley (not her real name) called into a radio show recently to talk to a relationship expert about her rocky relationship with her boyfriend: “Every now and then things are perfect between us. We get along, and we’re so happy and in love. And then one day I’ll come home from work, and he won’t be talking to me. Or he’ll suddenly snap and accuse me of lying. What should I do?” The expert suggested that the boyfriend suffered from anger management issues. The woman was not to blame for his behavior. “Okay,” she said, “But I love him to death.” The expert said, “But you can’t have a healthy relationship until he gets help.” “Okay,” she repeated, “But I love him to death.” Then she launched into the spiel about how happy she is until he freezes her out. The expert tried to reason with the woman, but he wasn’t getting through. She loved the guy; that justified her allowing him to treat her like garbage. This woman did not want to solve her problem. The fact that she kept saying, “But I love him to death,” indicated that she merely wanted the expert to validate her reasons for continuing the relationship. Here’s another sad story: A woman is married to a man who controls her and accuses her of flirting with men at church. Their relationship is volatile and sometimes violent. But she loves him. She’s crazy about him. He’s the air she breathes. When things are calm, she will pick a fight with him. It’s as if she needs him to be jealous. She needs him to control her. She interprets his unhealthy behavior as an affirmation of love. She gets off on the passion and excitment that comes with hurling lamps –and in one case, a baked potato– and then kissing and making up. And so does he. The fact that they’re unhappy, resentful, and disgusted 90% of the time doesn’t matter. Even though this woman calls friends every single day to complain about her husband, she won’t leave him. She won’t even seek counseling. Ten years from now, she’ll be crying about the same things she cried about this morning. If you’re in a rocky relationship, but you refuse to get out, ask yourself why. What’s in it for you? Do you truly believe that you have to suffer for love? So many women (and more than a couple of men, believe it or not) worry lines into their faces over a love that makes them miserable. Yet they refuse to leave the relationship. But love should not hurt. You can attract a happy relationship if it’s what you truly want. Do you believe that? Or must relationships be fraught with upset to be exciting and passionate? Your beliefs determine your destiny. In the end, it really is up to you. Isn’t it time a man treasured you and made your happiness a priority? Isn’t it time you let him? When love hurts, it’s time to find a love that doesn’t. Go for it. Regretting Your Perm, And Don’t Want To Wait For It To Grow Out? Learn How To Remove It Yourself

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Amy Turgeon Erase the perm: Have you ever had a perm that you absolutely regretted? Well guess what it can be removed without any trace of it ever being there. The best part is you can fix it yourself and do it in less than the time it took to do the perm the first time. You see the main ingredient in most perms is ammonium thioglycolate. This is the stuff that is squirted onto the perm rods. During the perm process this chemical actually breaks the disulfide bonds (these are the bonds that control the shape of your hair) in your hair and they lose their natural form and reshape themselves to the perm rods, which is how you end up with a curl, then the neutralizer stabilizes the shape and makes it permanent, hence a perm. So here is how you remove your unwanted perm. You simply saturate your hair with a perm solution with the same main ingredient as your original perm (like I said before it is usually thio) You are now applying it to your hair without any perm rods and simply combing it through, (keep coming it for approx 15 min or according to the manufacturers directions). Now you are doing just the opposite as what your original perm did, you are breaking the bonds again but now you are reshaping them and making them straight. Follow with the neutralizer to stabilize the bonds, follow the rest of the manufactures directions for steps such as how long to let the neutralizer sit and to rinse out, and guess what you just got your straight hair back. NOTE: this will only remove a perm; it will not remove natural curl. Get a complete, professional website, for one low monthly fee. We are currently running a promotion for 1 month completely free! Dandruff

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Niti Shahi Prologue and Rationale Dandruff refers to the flaking scalp, which falls like snow flakes and sometimes settles on ones shoulders, face, eyebrows and clothes. In the case of excessive formation of scales on the scalp there is irritating condition associated with bacteria. Dandruff is generally believed to be infections that can spread by the use of common towels, combs, soaps and hairbrushes. There are two types of dandruff: Dry dandruff Waxy dandruff An itchy scalp characterizes dry dandruff and small white scales are usually attached to the scalp or are loosely scattered in the hair. The waxy dandruff occurs when the scaliness of the epidermis is mixed with sebum, which causes it to stick to the scalp in patches. Symptoms Whenever the hair is brushed or rubbed the scaliness increases. It may also appear as lumps or crusts on the scalp. There is itching and sometimes the skin turns red due to excessive scratching. Causes The various contributing factors in the cause of dandruff are: Impairment of general health Poor nutrition Deficiency of zinc Fungus (malassezia furfur) Oily scalps Food allergies Excessive perspiration Stress Yeast infections High use of alkaline soaps and shampoos Exposure to dust Dry and cold weathers Treatment 1. Hot steam bath is highly beneficial for the hair and scalp. Massage hot oil and wrap a hot damp towel on the head for sometime. 2. Immerse peels of lemon in coconut oil for 8-10 days in sunshine. Now sieve and apply in the hair. Hair will become free of dandruff. 3. Hot oil therapy is the best method to cure dandruff. Massage hot oil into the scalp at bedtime. Next morning an hour before the bath, rub lemon juice mixed with cosmetic vinegar into the scalp with cotton wool. Wash your hair properly and as a last rinse use the juice of one lemon in a cup of hot water. Continue this treatment once or twice a week for three months. 4. Mix two tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar and six tablespoons of hot water. Dab this with cotton on the scalp and leave it overnight, next morning wash the hair with a shampoo. 5. Mix beetroot juice in vinegar and apply on the scalp 6. Ginger juice and beetroot juice mixed together and applied on the head also cures dandruff. 7. Massage your scalp with the mixture of olive oil and almond oil; leave it for five minutes after you feel the burning sensation. Rinse properly for a dandruff free hair. 8. Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Grind the softened seeds in the morning, apply this paste on the scalp and leave it for half an hour. Then wash you hair with ritha solution or shikakai 9. Cider vinegar added to the final rinsing water after shampooing also helps to prevent dandruff. 10. Exposure of the head to the rays of the sun is also useful measure in the treatment of dandruff. 11. Warm 300 grams of coconut oil with 3 grams of black pepper. When it starts boiling stop heating, sieve with a fine cloth and keep in a bottle. Massage with fingertips in the night gently. 12. The use of a teaspoon of fresh limejuice for the last rinse while washing hair in highly beneficial. It leaves the hair glowing and also removes stickiness and prevents dandruff. 13. Dilute cider vinegar with equal amount of water and dab this to the hair with cotton wool in between shampooing. 14. Mash beetroot leaves in henna paste and apply on the head to prevent dandruff and hair fall. 15. Rub the juice of snake gourd on the scalp for the treatment of dandruff. 16. Massage ones hair for half an hour with curd which has been left open for 3 days or with few drops of lime juice mixed with amla every night before going to bed. 17. Application of processed henna once in 15 days helps to prevent dandruff. Boil equal amounts of amla and shikakai powder in water and allow it to cool. Now mix henna powder, very small amount of fenugreek and roasted clove powder, a little lemon juice and egg. 18. Wash the hair with green gram powder in curd twice a week. 19. Immerse split black gram in milk, mix it and apply on the scalp. 20. Beat two eggs and add two tablespoons of water to it. Wet the hair and apply the egg mixture over the hair. Now massage your scalp and let the mixture on for ten minutes to fifteen minutes. Then rinse the hair with lukewarm water. This will keep both dandruff and hair fall problem away from you. Diet Diet plays an important role in the treatment of dandruff. The diet should consist of fresh juicy fruits, such as apples, grapes, pears, pineapple and peaches. Citrus fruits, bananas, dried or tinned fruits should not be taken. Emphasis should be on raw foods especially fresh fruits and vegetables, sprouted seeds, raw nuts and whole grain cereals. Starchy, protein and fatty foods should be restricted. Meats, sugar, strong tea or coffee, processed fruits, candies; soft drinks, pickles and condiments should be avoided. Massaging mixtures for dandruff Nasturtium tea Make a strong infusion with 1 drop of essential oil of thyme added to it. Use to rinse the hair or massage the scalp. Measuring Our Metabolism

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By James Penn Advertising has been strong when it comes to losing weight products and services. Through this medium, people are becoming more interested and captivated with the promises and the assurances these ads hold. In this modern world, everything that meets the eye is marketable- sad to say. We need not carried away with these commercials. Increasing your metabolism is the best means of doing so. You just need your self, and a little help from outside factors. The first step is to measure your metabolism. How do we measure metabolism? A metabolic test comes in two ways. The first method is direct calorimetry. This method measures the energy expended in the form of heat. The other one is indirect calorimetry, it measures the amount of oxygen consumed over a period of time. Traditionally used in hospital and research facilities due to the cost of the machine and the need for trained technicians. What are the needed preparations for the test? The aim of the test is to gauge the RMR or the Resting Metabolic Rate of an individual. Therefore, he or she needs to avoid eating a meal 1 and a half hours before the test, avoid exercising on the day of your test and avoid the use of stimulants such as caffeine on the day of the test. What happens in the testing bed? You will relax in a seated position; the doctor will ask you to do this. A mask or mouthpiece would be used and you have to breathe in there for ten to fifteen minutes. A report after the test would be printed out by the machine. The most important part is that you discuss the results with the doctor in order to come up with the next steps for your diet plans. Would the test results be useful for good? No. You have to retest after some time. Your RMR and your total metabolism changes through time. Change in any element of your lifestyle would directly affect the result. For you to keep a track of your metabolic rate, seek help from a doctor. There is a need for one person to give value to his metabolism because it will not just decide your size but it will have an impact on your lifestyle and on your entire life. Companionship Or A Love Affair?

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Kenneth Snodin A marriage is like any relationship and has its good times and bad, its agreements and disagreements. No one can expect everything to be wonderful at every minute of the day when two people from different backgrounds and with different feelings and expectations live together. Some marriages have serious problems that must be resolved through concentrated effort or even therapy, but most marriages just become boring over time. When considering problems in a marriage, it is critical to think about what exactly is causing the conflict or uneasiness before taking any action. In many marriages, the excitement of first love tends to fade with time. This does not mean that the partners love each other any less. It just means that they need some stimulation to remember and maintain the feelings they used to have for one another. The stimulation is often referred to as romance. Many individuals think that a marriage that appears ordinary lacks love, but this is untrue. Most marriages lack romance. While love is an easy and peaceful feeling, romance is the element that makes a relationship hot! Everyone in any kind of personal relationship wants passion and romance. However, there are some things about romance that people dont understand. The most common difficulty in creating romance is that people dont know how to accomplish it. Sometime, they are stuck in societal classifications, and their partners cant appreciate them for their unique qualities. As a result, people often just give up on finding romance. Today, when we are accustomed to convenience and having everything happen at the touch of a button, making an effort to create romance seems too difficult. However, you can take some really old-fashioned ideas about romance and make them work in our modern world. Romance in the 21st century can be alive with innovative ideas, passion, and creativity. Romance refers to the way you express your love for another, and it is necessary if you want to keep your love exciting and new. Without romance, love can become tiresome. Expressing your love through romance only works when it occurs without ulterior motives. Romance should only be initiated in order to show your love and appreciation for your partner. Think of romance as an artistic creation rather than as a science. Individuals who feel they must compete in everything they do must eliminate that attitude when attempting to create romance. Love and romance should not be a contest where one partner or another strives to win. Romance requires cooperation, but you can be romantic while retaining your individuality. Love and romance can transform you and your partner into perfect companions. Discover a collection of articles and resources about marriage and relationships at http://marriage-directory.com. Break Up & Divorce - Should You Condemn Yourself to a Bad Relationship Because of Religion and Guilt

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Jennifer L. Hunt If you’re in a bad marriage and are really unhappy, should you separate, get a divorce, or stay in the marriage? This is not a cut and dry decision as there are many factors to consider. We’re about to step outside the box and ask you to question beliefs that you may have never thought to question before. In other words, have an open mind as you read the rest of this article. Background - Is this a bad relationship? Imagine the following scenario… I was married for twelve years to a man (S) that deserted me twice. He also had numerous extra-marital infidelities. He took his stuff and left this last time about a year and a half ago. I tried and tried to talk to him but he refused to talk to me or answer my phone calls. I was just heartbroken. He was my second husband. My first husband wasn’t unfaithful, but he had an explosive temper and shouted and screamed at me. And even though he never actually hit me, I was afraid of him. Anyway, seven months after my second husband left me I decided to try and move on with my life. I met a wonderful man (D). He was everything I had wanted - Caring, responsible, trustful and very loving. We started slowly, but after awhile I fell deeply in love with him. And he fell in love with me. I hired an attorney. I filed for divorce. After I had been with D for around four months he proposed to me. I was very excited and accepted. I knew our relationship was perfect and we had a wonderful life ahead of us. We were doing everything together and I was so happy. S somehow found out and started to phone me. He told me he wanted us to get back together. He told me he would never do any of the things he had done to me before. He said he had found God and was going to church now. He said that he was a changed man. He said I was still his wife and I owed him another chance to prove he had changed. He told me he was a broken man and was thinking about suicide. I finally allowed him to see me he cried and cried and pleaded with me telling me he had changed. I felt so guilty . Should she take her husband back or stay with her new found love? What would you do? Love and Fear While this is a very emotional situation, you should not allow yourself to feel guilty about anything another person does or experiences. They make their own choices in life and their experiences are their own. Be understanding and empathize with the other person, but never, ever, make yourself responsible for what another person is experiencing. You can control how you behave and respond to a situation, but that is where your control ends. Never let another person make you feel guilty . There is no right or wrong choice in life because we grow from each experience - some choices just work better for us than others. Even the ones that didn’t work out quite like you hoped provide the opportunity to grow. Sometimes the best way to figure out what we want is to experience what we don’t want. Try to learn from past experiences so that you don’t keep repeating them over and over. The Universe, or God, seems to keep sending you the same situation or experience until you learn the lesson that you need to learn from that specific experience. In other words, patterns keep repeating until you get it right. Our emotional scale has two extremes - love and fear. In every situation - ask yourself if you’re acting out of love or fear, and always try to act out of love. Now that doesn’t mean letting someone walk all over you… You need to make decisions that feel right in your heart, in the core of your being, in your gut, however you want to explain it. Just make sure that you’re not making your decisions out of fear, anger, guilt, jealousy, revenge or any other negative emotion. Others may react to your decisions with a negative emotion, but remember what I said in the beginning - You can only control your responses, not theirs. If another person chooses to respond to something you do with a negative emotion, that’s their decision and you can’t control what they do. You can only accept their reaction with love and understanding. Make your life decisions based on what feels right for you. Many, but not all, will disagree with me, but the only person that you are ultimately responsible for in this life is you. Others come and go from your life so that you can further the experience of life, but you come into this life on your own and you leave on your own, so make sure that while your here you take care of YOU. Religion and Guilt When you choose to get advice from a religious counselor, remember that he is bound by the rules and regulations of whichever religion he chooses to follow. And those rules and regulations are not always based on love, but may also be based on control and trying to make the followers act and behave in a manner the religion deems appropriate. Forgiveness, however, is the most powerful tool that you have in this life. I believe there’s a quote that goes something like… “Forgiveness is God’s gift to the forgiver, not the forgiven” - something like that. It’s very true because when you forgive someone you let go of all the negative emotions around that situation whether or not the other person even knows that you forgave them. This may sound harsh, but I would ditch the church counselor. He does not necessarily have your best interest in mind. His main concern is that you follow the rules of the church, whether you’re happy or not. And I believe that we are all here to experience happiness. The doctrine of misery is fabricated by modern organized religion. They tell us that we have to suffer to be good people. Have you really read the Bible? I can’t find anywhere in the Bible that says we need to be miserable to be good people. My interpretation of Jesus’ teachings and the Bible is that we should love and accept everyone and every experience that comes into our life unconditionally because life is perfection. Sure, modern religion misquotes many specific passages in the Bible which have been translated by many different writers with many different perceptions through many different languages over thousands of years - and then tells us to follow their rules or go to Hell. I believe that Hell is defined by the self perpetrated misery that many people put themselves through each and every day. “Hell is what we experience when we are not true to ourselves.” We don’t need religion to tell us what is right and wrong. As long as you come from a place of love and acceptance, you’ll always make the right decisions. I’ve never known a truly spiritual person who judges or condemns another person. Why would an all powerful God need to judge us - that would be like us judging the actions of ant in an anthill on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean … OK, enough ranting on modern religion… In Summary If you find yourself in a similar situation, Follow your heart and do what you feel to be right. Stop listening to other people who are not on your path. You’ve heard the old saying to walk a mile in another’s shoes before judging them. Well, the fact is that no one has walked in your shoes and they have no right to tell you what is right or wrong for you. Stop repeating old patterns and stop punishing yourself for things that others perceive to be wrong. Follow your heart and your passions. Only then will you truly be happy. It is not your responsibility to make anyone else happy, but it IS your responsibility to make yourself happy. Wait. Get more great articles like this one at http://www.AskDanAndJennifer.com . Aeronautics and Air Pressure Science Proejcts for Homeschool Families

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Aurora Lipper Take your science projects to the next level with this in-depth look at Air Pressure. There’s air surrounding us everywhere, all at the same pressure of 14.7 psi (pounds per square inch). It’s the same force you feel on your skin whether you’re on the ceiling or the floor, under the bed or in the shower. An interesting thing happens when you change a pocket of air pressure - things start to move. This difference in pressure that causes movement is what creates winds, tornadoes, airplanes to fly, and some of the experiments we’re about to do right now. An important thing to remember is that higher pressure always pushes things around. (Meaning lower pressure does not “pull”, but rather that we think of higher pressure as a “push”.) Another interesting phenomenon occurs with fast-moving air particles. When air moves fast, it doesn’t have time to push on a nearby surface, like an airplane wing. It just zooms by, barely having time to touch the surface. The air particles are really in a rush. Think of really busy people driving fast in their cars. They are so busy doing other things and driving fast to get somewhere that they don’t have time to just sit and relax. Air pressure works the same way. When the air zooms by a surface (like an airplane wing) like fast cars, the fast air has no time to push on the surface and just sit there, so not as much air weight gets put on the surface. Less weight means less force on the area. (Think of “pressure” as force on a given area or surface.) This causes a less (or lower) pressure region wherever there is faster air movement. Confused? Great! Let’s try some experiments out to straighten out these concepts so they make sense to you. Okay, let’s begin. Air Takes Space In a big bowl (or sink or tub) full of water, lower a clear cup, mouth downward, into the water. Let some of the air escape slowly into a second submerged cup (as if you were pouring the air up). Remove one cup and realign the other mouth-downward, and using a flexible straw, blow into the mouth of the downward-facing cup. Magic Water Glass Trick Fill a glass two-thirds with water. Cover the mouth with an index card and invert (holding the card in place) over a sink. Remove your hand from the card. Voila! The card stays in place because air is heavier than water, and the card experiences about 15 pounds of force pushing upward by the air and only about one pound of force pushing downward from the water hence the card stays in place. (Try this with two glasses stacked mouth-to-mouth with the index card sandwiched in the middle. Remove the card) Plumber Magic Take two clean old-fashioned, red rubber-and-wood-stick plungers and stick them together (you may need to wet the rims first). Try to separate them. Why is it so hard? When you rammed them together, air was forced out of the cavity that the insides make when pushed together, leaving you with a lower air pressure pocket inside, compared to the surrounding air pressure of 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi) outside the plungers. Higher pressure always pushes and thus is keeping the plungers together. Magic Egg Trick Remove the shell from a hard-boiled egg and use a bottle with a neck large enough that the egg can be squeezed through (without squashing it) old fashioned milk bottles work great. Light a match and toss it in, quickly setting the egg (small-end down) on the mouth of the bottle. The air inside gets used up by the flame, lowering the air pressure inside the bottle. The higher pressure, now outside the bottle, pushes on the egg and pops it in. (To remove the egg, turn the bottle upside down and get the egg to be small-end down inside the bottle near the mouth. Blow hard into the mouth of the bottle.) Barometer Fill a cup two-thirds full of water. Cut the neck off a balloon and stretch over the mouth of the cup, fitting it tightly (like a drum). Tape a straw to the top, making one straw end one-third from the drumhead edge, and the free end hanging off. Place next to a wall covered with paper and mark the free end position. Over the next month, you can track pressure changes amplified by the straw. Burping Bottle Tape a lightweight plastic funnel tightly to the top of a strong straw, inserting the other end of the straw into a hole drilled into the top of a water bottle. Use hot glue to seal up any holes. Pour water into the funnel and watch it burp regularly. Fountain Bottle Seal a 2-liter soda water bottle (half-full of water) with a lump of clay wrapped around a long straw, sealing the straw to the mouth of the bottle. Blow hard into the straw. As you blow air into the bottle, the air pressure increases. This higher pressure pushes on the water, which gets forced up and out the straw. Ping Pong Funnel Insert a ping pong ball into a funnel and blow hard. (You can tilt your head back so that the ball end points to the ceiling. Can you blow hard enough so when you invert the funnel, the ball stays inside? Can you pick up a ball from the table? As you blow into the funnel, the air where the ball sits in the funnel moves faster and generates lower air pressure than the rest of the air surrounding the ball. This means that the pressure under the ball is lower than the surrounding air which is, by comparison, a higher pressure. This higher pressure pushes the ball back into the funnel no matter how hard you blow or which way you hold the funnel. Squished Soda Can Heat an empty soda can (large beer cans actually will work better if you have one) in a skillet with a few tablespoons of water in the can over a hot stove. Have a shallow dish with about inch of ice water handy (enough water to make a seal with the top of the can). When the can emits steam, grab the can with tongs and quickly invert it into the dish. CRACK! The air in the can was heated, and things that are hot tend to expand. When you cool it quickly by taking it off the stove onto a cold plate, the air cools down and shrinks, creating a lower pressure inside. Since the surrounding air outside of the can is now higher, it pushes on all sides of the can and crushes it. Squished Balloon Blow a balloon up so that it is just a bit larger than the opening of a large jam jar and can’t be easily shoved in. Light a small wad of paper towel on fire and drop it into the jar. Place the balloon on top. When the fire goes out, lift the balloon and the jar goes with it! The air gets used up by the flame and lower the air pressure inside the jar. The surrounding air outside, now at a higher pressure than inside the jar, pushes the balloon into the jam jar. The Million Dollar Bet Take an empty water or soda bottle and lay it down horizontally on a table. Carefully set a small wadded up ball of paper towel in the mouth of the bottle. (The ball should be about half the size of the opening.) I bet you a million dollars that you can’t blow hard and get the paper to go into the bottle! You’re trying to force more air into the bottle, but there’s no room for the air already inside to go except back out the mouth of the bottle, taking the paper ball with it. Ping Pong Jump Cups Place a ping pong ball in a cup just barely bigger than the ping pong ball. Blow down on the ball and the ball jumps right out of the cup! Remember the ideas about lower and higher pressure? By blowing on the top of the ball, you created a lower pressure area than underneath the ball. And higher pressure pushes the ball right out of the cup! Sneaky Bottles (Modify one water bottle in advance by poking a small hole near the bottom of the bottle with a tack or pin.) Take two water bottles (one of them you just modified), and poke a balloon into each water bottle, stretching the end of the balloon over the mouth of the bottle. Blow into each one what happened? There’s no place for the air to go in the unmodified bottle, so you can’t blow up the balloon. On the other hand, there’s plenty of room for the balloon to expand in the modified bottle because there’s a place for the air to move when the balloon gets bigger it goes out the hole you punched. Flying Papers Hold a regular sheet of paper to your bottom lip (you may have to play a bit to find the exact location) and blow hard across the sheet. The sheet flies up! This is the same reason airplanes can fly. As you blow across the top of the sheet, you lower the air pressure (because the air is moving faster), and thus the pressure on the underside of the sheet is now higher, and higher air pressure pushes the sheet upwards. Kissing Balloons Blow up two balloons. Attach a piece of sting to each balloon. Have each hand hold one string so that the balloons are at nose-level, 6″ apart. Blow hard between the balloons and watch them move! The air pressure is lowered as you blow between the balloons (think of the air molecules as ping pong balls they balls don’t have enough time to touch the balloon surface as they zoom by). Tall Ship Models

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Jennifer Bailey Tall ship models are models of traditional sailing vessels engaged in historical, sailing, research, or windjammer charter operations such as stationary museum ships and vessels no longer in existence. There are hundreds of tall ships sailing around the globe. Many of these vessels survive to relive a bit of history and a set of skills evolved hundreds of years ago. Some of these ships carry out training programs, allowing anyone with an inclination to have hands-on sail training cruises ranging from a few days to several weeks. Some vessels undertake voyages of exploration and science programs. The fleet of tall ships is growing throughout the world. Sea trials of Matthew, a replica of the vessel John Cabot sailed, which discovered Newfoundland, are being completed. Construction has begun on a replica of Friendship, a three-masted merchant vessel from Salem, Massachusetts. There are replicas of HMS Rose, HMS Bounty, USB Niagara, Providence, Spirit of Massachusetts, Lady Washington, and a host of other tall ships. Connoisseurs of ship modeling have a fascination for tall ship models. The prestigious American Marine Model Gallery, located in Salem, Massachusetts, has a large collection of historic ship models built by the finest ship-modeling artists. Salem was one of Americas busiest seaports and maritime centers during the Great Age of Sail. In the marine model gallery, antique ship models, including those by Napoleonic prisoners of war, navy board ship models, builders models and Pond yacht models are available. There are hundreds of dealers offering kits of tall ships for a price ranging from $89.99 to $349.99. There are actual, exquisite tall ship models that can cost up to $15,000. Various websites have been bringing buyers and sellers together from all around the world. Ship Models provides detailed information on Ship Models, Tall Ship Models, Wooden Ship Models, Sailing Ship Models and more. Ship Models is affiliated with Model Ships. Skin Toners: The Way Nature Intended

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Faye Spencer There is a lot of debate surrounding the effectiveness and necessity of skin toners. Whether or not you choose to use skin toner within your own skincare routine is up to you. Some people object to create their own skin toners as opposed to going out and buying it. The benefits of this method of creating your own recipes is obviously that you will know exactly what is going into you or skin toner concoction because you are the one designing it. Obviously you should be fairly comfortable with reading your own toners if you’re going to utilize this method. But for those of you who are might want to consider the costs associated with having certain natural ingredients such as rose petals and any number of organic natural recipes. Some skin toners are made from harvest fruit or vegetables and will wide not only a natural solution for a toner but will make you look especially tasty, heh. Just from reading the first few paragraphs of this article you should already begin to imagine the amazing number of possibilities not only in the creation of a skin toner or the acquisition of skin toner but in terms of the application. However if you simply just want to get this process done within your skincare regimen you should just go buy from your corner grocery pharmacy or supermarket. Natural skin care product items that are home made may require an initial investment in time, but may be worth it for you. Hiring the Best - Interviewing Strategies that WORK!

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Terence Traut In todays competitive environment, hiring has increasingly become a key link in establishing and maintaining your companys edge. By attracting and hiring the best people, your company can move quickly and grow steadily. On the flip side, however, poor hires cost you precious time, money, and opportunity. Poor hiring could cost you your company. Unfortunately, hiring candidates who can do what they say they can do is getting tougher. A whole industry has sprung up in the past ten years helping job seekers land a job sometimes at all costs. You cant afford to hire someone who cant do the job, do it with minimal direction, or do it quickly. Fortunately, there are techniques that you can use to ensure that the candidate you select can do the job. We will examine four techniques here demonstrations, simulations, problem solving, and testing and introduce a powerful interviewing technique High Performance Interviewing that we will cover in more detail in the next issue of Performance News. Demonstrations Ideally, the best way to see if a candidate is able to do the job is to have them actually do the job. To have them, in other words, demonstrate their ability to do the work. Sales representatives can sell something; software engineers can code something; machine operators can operate a machine; secretaries can answer phones or type a memo; etc. Simulation Sometimes demonstrations are not possible or appropriate. The next best thing to a demonstration is a simulation. A simulation is like a demonstration except that the situation is not real. In sales or customer service, for example, you can role play an angry customer and have the candidate respond to your anger. Another example of a simulation is having a telesales representative call you (the customer) to sell you something. Or, if youre interviewing for a training position, you could have the candidate teach you something. Problem Solving Sometimes demonstrations and simulations are not feasible. Then problem solving might provide you with confidence in the persons ability. Problem solving is a technique many interviewers use to see how adept the candidate is in addressing real or hypothetical problems and challenges. It is one step removed from simulation because in problem solving the candidate describes what s/he would do rather than simulating what s/he would do. A cautionary note: problem solving by itself may only indicate what a person SAYS s/he will do in a given situation, not how they actually will or did behave. Still, problem solving is a good way to check a critical skill. Test Tests are also sometimes helpful as part of the hiring process. Psychological tests provide a way for some companies to identify key characteristics in an individual. Other ways of testing include asking specific knowledge questions such as What commands might you use to initiate a subroutine? or What are the advantages and disadvantages of common network protocols? Interview However, sometimes demonstrations, simulations, problem solving, or testing might not be feasible; at the very least they — by themselves — are inadequate. Interviewing is required. Effective interviewing requires that you have sharp probing and listening skills to get the candidate to describe or explain relevant experiences from which you can draw highly predictive information. We call this type of interviewing High Performance Interviewing. Can we maximize the traditional method of hiring candidates the interview to hire more effectively? The answer is, YES! Many interviews result in a mutual exchange of meaningless information and a gut feeling. The process we call High Performance Interviewing (HPI) helps you gather meaningful, predictive information and substantiates your gut feeling.HPI is based on the premise that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. HPI is designed to extract highly predictive, accurate target data from candidates. Target data is: Behavioral: The data must be about what the candidate did, said, thought, or felt. We do not consider what the person was responsible for as target data since it doesnt tell what the person actually did. The data must be about the candidate. We do not consider we data target data since we dont know what the candidate did. Volunteered by the candidate: Target data comes from the candidates memory, not the interviewers suggestions or prompting. About a specific past situation: Focused on what actually happened, not on what might have happened, or what generally happens. Having the candidate state what they would do in specific scenarios may point out problem solving and quick thinking but may not predict what the person actually has done in similar situations. Only data based on past situations is considered target data. Step 1: General Opening Statement or Question Begin gathering target data with general opening questions or statements. The purpose of this step is to get the candidate to talk about what we want them to talk about. Here are examples of general openings. (The phrases in parentheses are examples of specific skills I might be looking for in a candidate.): Im looking for (examples of when you managed multiple priorities). Id like to hear more about (your experiences in delegating). Id like to find out how (you respond to autonomy and little direction). Can you think of a time when (you had a difficult deadline to meet)? Do you recall an instance where (you were aware that another member of the team was not pulling his or her own weight)? Is there an example of (a challenge you faced in coding a new module)? Step 2: Get Deeper The next step in gathering target data is to get deeper in those areas important to the job. Questions that help you get deeper include: How did it start? What were the key points in the situation? What were the results? What happened first/then/next? What did you do/say/feel/think? How did you prepare/follow-up? What do you believe was the most important event/decision/activity during that time? Here are several guidelines for getting deeper: Ask what the candidate did, said, felt, thought. Separate the candidates actions from others actions. Ask who, what, when, where, and how. What is your role throughout this questioning? Take notes to help you guide the conversation. Listen. Ask for clarity when necessary. Remember, we cannot assess a candidates qualifications if WE do all the talking! What You Dont Do It is important that you as interviewer dont: Ask leading questions: Leading questions give you exactly what you want to hear. And they typically result in inaccurate data. Accept generalizations: Generalizations dont tell you what the candidate did. Target data must be specific. Accept collectivisms: Collectivisms are the use of we, the group, my team, etc. They dont tell us what this individual — the candidate — did. Again, target data must be specific. Assess the candidate before hearing all: Prejudging a candidate before the data is heard is a serious mistake. The brain can easily find data to support its prejudgment. Therefore, stick to the script; write down what you hear as the interviewer. The time for assessment comes later. How To Get Back On Track Because HPI is a dialogue, it is sometimes easy for the candidate to digress. It is your responsibility as interviewer to pull the candidates discussion into more relevant and appropriate direction. Here are some pithy phrases that will rein in or focus the digresser: If I was there, what would I see? You said there were meetings. Could you tell me about one? Can you give me the details? Lets backtrack a bit. Who do you mean by we? When youve gathered an appropriate amount of data for a particular skill, repeat the HPI technique until you are satisfied with the results. Then close the interview. Terence R.
